Getting through the process

Dissertation/thesis support — involves helping students navigate through the academic and bureaucratic challenges and hurdles associated with dissertation/thesis journeys.

Finding the Goldilocks thesis topic — When the right topic eludes you we can help. The goldilocks topic advances the art and its scope is neither too narrow nor too broad allowing effective research, within budget and resources to be performed. Don't get hung up on finding a topic if necessary we can help with topic ideation, topic research, topic definition, and so forth. Write or call us and help will be at hand.

Research design — Ensure that your research directly supports your research questions, is in alignment with your theoretical framework, and is in alignment with your analytical approach whether statistical or the approaches used in qualitative research.

Conceptual brainstorming — It could be your topic, how to approach it, how things need to fit together or other matters.

Emotional support — Sometimes you just need someone to talk to you who really understands. This is doubly important at online programs.

Committee assistance — Committee members can be supportive of your research and your goals – or not. Committee members often have expectations that need to be met that differ from your Chair's (worse, occasionally different from your school's!) Sometimes you need help managing, or even understanding, what is going on.

Outlining — Yes, outlining is important for the proposal as well as your dissertation text. An outline is a skeleton that can be clothed with the flesh of finished text. An outline tells you if you have enough material and also if the material flows logically. An outline keeps you in alignment with your topic and helps maintain focus. Finally, after covering all the material in your outline for a chapter you know when the chapter is done.

Roadmap planning — Assists graduate students in mapping out their goals and timelines to facilitate successful and timely completion of their studies.

What AI can do for you, what it can do with you, and what it cannot do at all

And a huge, not so gratuitous warning.

• It deletes true material and calls the deletion a correction. A real term, a real source, a real distinction — reported as invented, and removed.
• It reads precision as redundancy. Two sentences specifying different things get merged into one. The prose improves. The meaning goes.
• It replaces a specific claim with a vague one. Fewer than forty becomes around forty. Nobody queries it, because nobody can.
• It drops insertions silently. Text you added does not come back, and nothing reports it. Replacements announce their own failure; insertions do not.
• It forgets what it told you — and gives no signal of having forgotten. It reports a finding instead.
• It misreports what just happened, from a record still in front of it.
• It shifts the meaning while keeping the shape. Ask it to adapt a passage for a different reader and you get something that reads like the same argument and makes a different claim. Nothing looks wrong. It is simply about something else now.
• It reproduces its own work from memory, and the copy is worse. Ask for the same passage on a second page and you get a paraphrase — shorter, reworded, items missing — presented as the thing itself. This is the most frequent failure on this list by a wide margin.
• It agrees with you. Ask whether your argument holds and it will say yes. This one needs no case log — it is built into how these systems are trained, and you can reproduce it in seconds with your own work.

What every item has in common: the output reads perfectly well.

There is no error message, no flag, no gap on the page. And none of it is a matter of using a better model — every case above involved current, paid, frontier-tier systems.

That is the warning. Here is what follows from it.

Free. We set it up, AI does it, you keep the money.

Everything in this group, we configure and hand to you. We recommend the model, we supply the prompts, and we do not bill for any of it. What we charge for is a final read by an experienced set of eyes — and that takes very little time.

Basic editing — grammar, punctuation, spelling, typos, formatting mechanics, and a check on your in-text citations. A good AI model does this properly once it is set up correctly. Setting it up correctly is the part people get wrong, and it is the part we give away.

Style compliance — APA 7th, MLA, or whatever your institution requires. Matching a format is pattern work, and pattern work is what these tools are for.

Formatting support — headers and footers, margins, page layout, table and chart layout, auto-generated tables of contents. Your word processor does most of this and nobody taught you. AI does it too now. We will show you both.

AI does part of it. You keep part of the money. Here is exactly which part.

This is the group nobody else spells out, and the distinction matters more than the saving.

Reference and bibliography checking. AI catches format errors — a missing italic, a wrong indent, an inconsistent date style, an entry in your bibliography with no citation in the text. It will not catch a DOI that resolves to a different paper than the one you cited. That happens, we have seen it, and no formatting check finds it.

Data graphics. AI will build the table, the chart, the figure. It will not tell you the axis you chose flatters your result, or that the scale makes a small effect look decisive. A reviewer will notice. The tool will not.

Style compliance, the second half. AI matches the format of a citation. It cannot tell you whether the source supports the claim you attached to it — which is the thing a committee actually checks.

In each case the machine does the mechanical half and we do the half that requires knowing what the work is about. You pay for the second half only.

AI can't. We can. We keep the money.

Advanced editing — the bulk of the editing that we do. It checks holistic consistency across your entire document: does your stated methodology in chapter 3 match what chapter 4 reports doing, does terminology introduced early still mean the same thing later, does every claim rest on something.

Content editing — addresses gaps in the logic of your arguments, finds where clarity is lacking, detects inadvertent plagiarism, and cuts redundancy.

Research support — helps you find the most current and appropriate material to build your literature review on.

You have worked hard on your research, you are in a position to advance the art. Poorly drafted or difficult to follow verbiage will leave your work at the margins of your field. Publish regularly?

If you publish regularly, you are reading this for one of two reasons.

(a) You had a great editor and lost them.

(b) You have realized that mediocre editing is costing you — and every citation lost hurts.

What you are looking for is not an editor. That word now covers everything from a spellcheck to a rewrite, and the machines have taken the bottom of it.

You are looking for an advanced editor — what most universities call a content editor or a substantive editor, and what a technical field would call a technical editor. Somebody who engages with your content, understands it, and can restructure and reword where necessary — for clarity, and sometimes to meet a word limit.
